Preparation

Items Needed:

  1. Deity Idol or Picture: Choose a murti or picture of Lord Vishnu.
  2. Puja Thali: Arrange the following items on a thali:
    • Kumkum
    • Haldi
    • Chandan
    • Akshata
    • Fresh flowers or petals
    • Agarbatti
    • Diya
    • Kapoor
    • Fruits, sweets, or other naivedya
    • Bell
    • Water in a small container
    • Betel leaves and nuts (optional)
  3. Puja Cloth: Clean cloth for the altar.
  4. Asana: Clean mat or cloth to sit on.

Setting Up:

  1. Clean the Area: Ensure the puja area is clean and tidy.
  2. Set Up the Altar: Place Lord Vishnu’s murti or picture on the altar and cover it with a clean cloth.
  3. Arrange the Items: Place all the puja items neatly on the puja thali and keep it near the altar.

Performing the Puja

  1. Invocation (Dhyana):

    • Sit comfortably on the asana facing the altar.
    • Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and focus on Lord Vishnu.
    • Mentally invite Lord Vishnu to your home and request His presence.
  2. Lighting the Lamp and Incense:

    • Light the diya and agarbatti.
    • Place the agarbatti in a holder and wave the diya in a circular motion before Lord Vishnu.
  3. Offering Water (Achamana):

    • Sprinkle a few drops of water around the altar and on yourself, symbolically purifying the space and yourself.
  4. Applying Tilak:

    • Apply a small amount of kumkum, haldi, and chandan on Lord Vishnu’s forehead (if it’s a murti) or in front of the picture.
    • Apply a tilak on your forehead as well.
  5. Offering Flowers and Akshata:

    • Offer fresh flowers or flower petals to Lord Vishnu by placing them near the murti or picture.
    • Offer akshata by gently placing it near the deity.
  6. Chanting Mantras and Sahasranama:

    • Recite simple mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu, such as "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".

    • Continue with as many names as you are comfortable with. The full recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama consists of 1000 names.
  7. Offering Food (Naivedya):

    • Place the fruits, sweets, or any other naivedya you have prepared on a clean plate and offer them to Lord Vishnu.
    • You can say a simple prayer like, "Please accept this humble offering, dear Vishnu."
  8. Aarti:

    • Light the kapoor on a small plate or an aarti holder.
    • Wave the aarti in front of Lord Vishnu in a clockwise direction while ringing the bell with your other hand.
    • Sing the Vishnu aarti or chant simple mantras while performing the aarti.
  9. Circumambulation (Pradakshina):

    • After the aarti, perform a pradakshina around the altar or the deity by walking around it clockwise at least three times.
  10. Prostration (Namaskara):

    • Finally, bow down to Lord Vishnu by touching your forehead to the ground in a gesture of complete surrender and respect.
  11. Distribute Prasad:

    • After the puja, distribute the naivedya (now considered prasad) to family members and yourself.
